Edenton Steamers
Meet me at Historic Hicks Field!

May 23, 2008 2:05 pm

Waldo and Nancy with their 2007 Steamers guests

The 2008 season for the Edenton Steamers is about to begin!

The Edenton Steamers is one of 14 teams across North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia in the Coastal Plain League. The CPL is a collegiate summer league featuring top-notch college players from throughout the nation, and is the best baseball action of the summer! The CPL gives college players the opportunity to play in a major league-style wooden bat league and to improve their skills in a professional environment. The Coastal Plain League provides a great opportunity for MLB scouts to see up-and-coming players in action, and has seen many players who are now professionals, including Joe Smith of the New York Mets, who played for the Edenton Steamers in 2005. The CPL is now in its 12th season, and the Steamers are the defending 2004 and 2005 Coastal Plain League Champions.

Check out one of these upcoming home games:

1ST HOME GAME: Thursday, May 29 vs. Petersburg Generals
Saturday, May 31 vs. Outer Banks Daredevils
Monday, June 2 vs. Peninsula Pilots
Friday, June 6 vs. Outer Banks Daredevils

The Coastal Plain League and the Edenton Steamers would not be possible without the generosity of “host families”. Our players and coaches stay with local residents for a 10-week period from late May until mid-August. Waldo and Nancy had the pleasure of hosting Kyle Rice of the University of South Carolina-Aiken and Kenny Elkind of Angelo State University in Texas (pictured above) for the 2007 season, and Kyle will be returning to their home for the 2008 season. If you live in the area and would like to know more about becoming a host family, contact the Steamers’ office at (252) 482-4080.

Get the details:

  • Gates open at 6pm. All games start at 7:05pm. Tickets are $5 for general admission, $4 for seniors and children, and can be purchased at the ballpark. Also ask them about Season Tickets!
  • Stop by our realty office on Broad Street for a 2008 game schedule.

Joining Forces for Health

Chowan Goes the Distance
Mark Noneman, Lisa Spry, Shannon Ray and Robbie Laughton display some of the many ways to be physically active for a new program to walk from North Carolina to California.

It may be impossible for all citizens of Chowan County to walk from North Carolina to California, but a small group of health enthusiasts have put together a program to hypothetically make it happen. Using pedometers and exercise conversion charts, the group has developed a plan to get people more physically active in a fun and unique way.
The program is called “Chowan Goes the Distance” and the objective is for Chowan citizens to form teams, record their activity and receive credit for mileage to make the 2,700 mile trip across the USA. The program is a partnership between the Edenton-Chowan Recreation Department, Albemarle Regional Health Services and Three Rivers Healthy Carolinians.

Sarah Tynch, one of our Associate Brokers, enjoys paddling the beautiful creeks around Rocky Hock.

Shannon Ray of the Recreation Department said, “Any activity that is sustained for twenty minutes or longer and gets your heart rate up can be converted to an equivalent number of miles walked.” Teams can be formed from your family, friends, co-workers, students or any combination of four persons. No age limitations or skill level is necessary to be involved. This is truly a program for anyone.

Activities that count towards mileage are virtually limitless. Gardening, walking behind a mower, playing tennis, dancing, cleaning house and raking leaves are all examples of physical activities that can be used during this program.
Further information on the program can be obtained by calling the Recreation Department at 482-8595 or 221-4901.

Operation Inasmuch:
Reaching Out Into Our Community

May 9, 2008 2:50 pm
…Truly, I say to you, inasmuch as you did it to one of the least of these my brethren, you did it to me.  Matthew 25:40

On April 19th, over 900 churches in North Carolina participated in the single largest statewide mission project ever undertaken by North Carolina Baptists.  Included was Edenton Baptist Church and two of our sales team:  our broker-in-charge and home builder, Waldo Winslow, and our associate broker and construction coordinator, Karen Long. Waldo Winslow and Karen Long at Operation Inasmuch

This was a great opportunity to give back to our wonderful community by sharing our own abilities and helping to enrich our neighbors’ lives.  -Waldo Winslow

Operation Inasmuch was begun in 1995 by a Baptist church in Fayetteville, NC, and has become a bi-annual, interdenominational event in that area.  Operation Inasmuch has stretched its helping hand to several states outside of North Carolina, and has even been done in Canada and by at least one church in England!

 Operation Inasmuch: Edenton

Edenton Baptist Church had approximately 125 volunteers working on many different projects.  Waldo and Karen were part of a team who assembled playground equipment for a foster care home.  Many other projects included doing yardwork, building steps on a home, painting projects, visiting the local nursing home and providing meals and care packages within the community.

This day of local missions is just one example of what makes Edenton such a wonderful community.  So many friendly faces actually willing to reach out and help their neighbors goes above and beyond “southern hospitality” to make this a truly special place.
